Divine - Walk Like a Man
Harris Glenn Milstead
Oct. 19, 1945 - Mar. 7, 1988
Actor, singer, cult figure, known exclusively by his drag persona, "Divine." Born Harris Glenn Milstead to Bernard and Diana Francis Milstead, he moved at age 12 to Lutherville, a Maryland suburb, where he later met John Waters in High School. Waters became a lifelong friend and the infamous union of director and star was born. Divine starred in a number of films and was well known for being a part of the regular cast and crew of the troupe The Dreamlanders who appeared in many of Waters' earlier works such as "Pink Flamingos," "Female Trouble," "Polyester," "Hairspray" and "Lust In The Dust." Divine also enjoyed a short lived music career in the 1980s with songs like "I'm So Beautiful," "Love Reaction" and "Native Love." Divine will probably be most remembered for his portrayal of housewife turned scary stage-mom Edna Turnbladt in "Hairspray," Waters' spoof on 1960s dance shows which heralded near unanimous critical acclaim.
